Every time I see a ptarmigan picture, I recall the time my daughter and I were hiking, saw a ptarmigan, discussed traditional hunting methods. She casually took a rock, aimed, and knocked that ptarmigan for a loop. She was sooooo mortified. It didn't end up as dinner...it was just stunned.

Poor thing! These ptarmigan were living in a National Park, and in a fairly rugged area to begin with - they had no fear of humans at all. If it weren't for the fact that we were scrupulous, we wouldn't have had the self control you and your daughter had - ptarmigan soup sounded great at that point! Instead, we watched them tend to their chicks for a bit, before we carried on with our work. :)
